Spur Local
Matt is the Executive Director of Spur Local, and has been with the organization since 2017. Matt launched Spur Local’s capacity building work, which has now trained over 25,000 nonprofit participants since its inception. Recognizing this work, Matt was named a “40 under 40” leader by the Washington Business Journal in 2022 and was a recipient of the David Bradt Nonprofit Leadership Award from the Greater Washington Community Foundation in 2023. Since Matt began at Spur Local, the organization has raised over $20M for local nonprofits, including growing its GivingTuesday campaign to over $1M raised for the community in each of the past four years. As both a trainer and nonprofit leader, Matt brings direct fundraising experience for Spur Local as well as anecdotes and learnings from the 500 grassroots nonprofits Spur Local partners with. This unique and dual focus helps keep Matt’s training and workshops grounded in actionable advice and realistic calls to action. Prior to Spur Local, Matt worked in leadership development consulting at a for-profit firm in D.C. He began his career in civic engagement and public health, working both in the nonprofit and government sectors. Matt is a Truman Scholar who received his Masters of Public Administration from Syracuse University and attended college at Southern Methodist University where he studied public policy, political science, and human rights.
